Axivate Horeca acquires five venues from Utrechtse Horeca Groep, marking strategic consolidation in Utrecht's hospitality sector.

Axivate Horeca has acquired a majority stake in the hospitality portfolio of Utrechtse Horeca Groep, taking ownership of five established venues: Blend, Bar Basta, Vis & Meer, Club Claar, and Dengh. The transaction, which does not disclose financial terms, represents a significant repositioning for Utrechtse Horeca Groep after a period of rapid growth since its founding in 2021.

The deal transfers five of the group’s eight hospitality concepts to Axivate Horeca, a well-established operator in the Utrecht market. Despite the ownership change, the acquired venues will retain their existing branding and operational structures, ensuring continuity for both guests and staff. Daily operations are expected to proceed without disruption.

Utrechtse Horeca Groep, founded in 2021, quickly became a prominent player in the city’s hospitality sector with a diverse portfolio emphasizing quality and experiential venues rather than sheer expansion. The group’s portfolio included a mix of restaurants and bars, alongside larger projects such as the HAL22 sports and hospitality location.

The sale follows a significant incident earlier this year involving the collapse of the HAL22 venue, one of the group’s flagship projects. Although no injuries occurred, the event had a profound impact on the organization’s strategic direction. Co-founder Perry Overeem told RTV Utrecht that the group is taking a step back to reassess its priorities, stating, “We want to reconsider and make choices. We are going back to the drawing board.” This marks a clear shift from the group’s previous ambition of controlled regional growth to a focus on consolidation and repositioning.

Axivate Horeca’s acquisition strengthens its position as a leading hospitality operator in Utrecht by expanding its venue portfolio and leveraging synergies across the acquired businesses. The consolidation is expected to create operational efficiencies through shared procurement, administrative functions, and staffing resources. Additionally, Axivate Horeca can capitalize on cross-selling opportunities and an enhanced marketing reach within the Utrecht hospitality market.

Despite the divestment, Utrechtse Horeca Groep retains ownership of three venues: the beach pavilion at Haarrijnseplas, restaurant Kortjak, and the HAL22 site, which remains a focus for recovery and repositioning efforts. Overeem indicated that further changes could occur, noting, “I think we will continue together, but you never know for sure.”

The hospitality sector in Utrecht is experiencing accelerated consolidation as operators seek scale and efficiency amid evolving consumer preferences and economic pressures. Competitors may respond with their own acquisitions or innovation in concept offerings to maintain market share.

Looking ahead, Axivate Horeca aims to integrate the new venues smoothly while preserving their unique identities. Utrechtse Horeca Groep plans to stabilize its remaining assets and redefine its strategic path following the recent challenges.
