Zwanenburg has acquired Staalbouw Nagelhout, now Staalbouw Bakhuizen, to enhance development in the steel construction sector.
Zwanenburg, a company based in Heerenveen, has officially acquired Staalbouw Nagelhout, which will now be known as Staalbouw Bakhuizen. This strategic move, announced on February 24, 2026, effective immediately, aims to ensure the continuity of operations, preserve jobs, and foster further development within the specialist steel construction sector.
Henderikus Oostra, the director of the newly renamed Staalbouw Bakhuizen, has been with the company for 40 years. He emphasized the importance of the company’s established foundation, stating, “What here stands has been built with craftsmanship and hard work. That foundation remains. At the same time, we are taking steps to make the company future-proof. Our principle of ‘a deal is a deal’ remains our basis.” The company will continue its ongoing projects, which include notable works such as Forum Groningen and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
Erik Zwanenburg, the owner of Zwanenburg, highlighted the reputation and expertise of Staalbouw Bakhuizen as key factors in the acquisition. He remarked, “It is important that these types of specialist companies remain anchored in the region.” The acquisition is expected to enhance Zwanenburg’s market position in the regional steel construction sector.
Staalbouw Bakhuizen specializes in steel constructions for utility buildings, and the acquisition is anticipated to create synergies in revenue through cross-selling opportunities and leveraging Staalbouw’s established reputation to attract new clients. Additionally, the integration of operations may lead to shared administrative costs and improved project management.
While the financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, the acquisition is seen as a strategic move to bolster Zwanenburg’s capabilities and market share. The company aims to expand its geographic reach and enhance its service offerings in the steel construction sector.
Looking ahead, Zwanenburg plans to focus on integrating the two companies while maintaining operational continuity. The acquisition is expected to accelerate industry consolidation, prompting competitors to consider similar strategies to enhance their market positions.
