Plugge’s Puur acquires Visgroothandel W. van Wijk, doubling size and boosting sustainability in Dutch seafood wholesale. Read the full deal details.
Plugge’s Puur, a longstanding family-owned seafood wholesaler from Scheveningen, announces the acquisition of Visgroothandel W. van Wijk, another Scheveningen-based family business, effective June 1, 2026. This strategic move consolidates the operations of both companies at Plugge’s Puur’s facility on Visafslagweg, opened in 2024, marking a significant step in expanding their footprint within the Dutch seafood wholesale sector.
The financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed. The acquisition involves a full 100% stake in Visgroothandel W. van Wijk, founded in 1970, which supplies fish products to fish shops, market traders, and the hospitality industry. The integration is expected to double Plugge’s Puur’s size and broaden its national reach.
Plugge’s Puur traces its origins to 1932 when the founder’s grandfather sold fish from a cart in Scheveningen. Now in its fourth generation, the company supplies over 100 fish specialty shops and emphasizes sustainability across sourcing, transportation, and waste management. Visgroothandel W. van Wijk, led by its third generation, shares a similar family business culture focused on craftsmanship and customer care.
Dirk Plugge, director of Plugge’s Puur, highlights the cultural alignment between the two companies: “Visgroothandel van Wijk is, like us, a Scheveningen family business with a rich history. We share a commitment to customer care, product quality, and generational expertise. Our knowledge and networks complement each other well.”
Wim Plugge, co-director, adds, “This acquisition doubles our size and extends our national coverage. The seafood sector faces significant challenges, and this scale increase positions us better for future growth.”
The deal reflects broader industry trends of consolidation in the seafood wholesale market, driven by increasing competition from imported fish and rising demands for sustainability. Plugge’s Puur aims to leverage its expanded scale to negotiate better supplier terms and enhance its sustainability leadership, seeking to become the most sustainable seafood wholesaler in Scheveningen.
Operational synergies include consolidating facilities to reduce overhead and logistics costs, streamlining procurement, and sharing expertise to improve customer service. The combined company will operate from Plugge’s Puur’s modern facility, facilitating integrated logistics and supply chain management.
Challenges remain in aligning operational processes and maintaining the distinct family business cultures during integration. Both companies emphasize preserving personal customer relationships and craftsmanship, which have been valued for generations.
Looking ahead, Plugge’s Puur plans to maintain close ties with its customers and the local community while expanding its national presence. The acquisition positions the company to respond effectively to market pressures and sustainability expectations.
