Happy Horizon, the Netherlands’ largest agency group specializing in digital, creative, and strategic services, backed by Dutsch private equity firm MG Partners, has acquired Ask Phill, an Amsterdam-based Shopify Platinum Partner known for its expertise in Shopify migrations, AI integration, and community building. The acquisition, finalized on October 23, 2026, marks a strategic expansion of Happy Horizon’s commerce and customer experience offerings.
Ask Phill, founded in 2016, has built a reputation over the past decade as a specialist in Shopify e-commerce solutions, completing over 200 migrations for prominent brands such as Suitsupply, American Eagle, and Bestseller Group. The company operates with a lean team of two founders and maintains a strong focus on AI-driven commerce innovations and community engagement through events like the NXT Commerce Summit.
Under the terms of the deal, Ask Phill will continue to operate under its own name and management team, with founders Martijn Wijsmuller and Paul Veen remaining actively involved. Happy Horizon has committed to investing in Ask Phill’s AI vision, product development, and community initiatives, enabling faster delivery and enhanced service capabilities for merchants.
Ubbo Maagdenberg, CEO of Happy Horizon, emphasizes the complementary nature of the acquisition: “We want to intervene as little as possible. Ask Phill will keep doing what they do best—Shopify work, AI innovation, and community building—while benefiting from the broader resources and expertise of our group.” This approach aims to preserve Ask Phill’s entrepreneurial culture while leveraging Happy Horizon’s scale and specialist teams in marketing, SEO, CRM, data, content, and PR.
The acquisition aligns with broader industry trends where e-commerce platforms like Shopify are moving upmarket, demanding more integrated and sophisticated service offerings. By combining Ask Phill’s AI-native approach with Happy Horizon’s multi-disciplinary agency capabilities, the group aims to deliver end-to-end digital commerce solutions that meet the evolving needs of larger and mid-market merchants.
Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. However, the deal represents a full acquisition of Ask Phill’s operations and intellectual property. The integration will focus on operational synergies such as shared resources, consolidated back-office functions, and economies of scale in technology investments, particularly in AI development.
Looking ahead, Ask Phill will serve as the center of excellence within Happy Horizon’s Commerce & CX business line for Shopify, commerce integrations, and AI-driven services. The partnership is expected to accelerate product innovation, expand community events across Europe, and enhance client retention through integrated marketing and CRM services.
For existing Ask Phill clients, the acquisition promises continuity with the same project teams and workflows, supplemented by access to a broader range of specialists on demand. The Ask Phill Accelerator product, designed for faster Shopify migrations with bespoke design and AI integration, will benefit from increased investment and scale.
While integration challenges such as maintaining Ask Phill’s brand identity and aligning corporate cultures remain, the collaboration positions Happy Horizon to strengthen its market leadership amid accelerating industry consolidation and rising client expectations for comprehensive digital commerce solutions.
As Martijn Wijsmuller and Paul Veen reflect on their journey from a modest start in Guangzhou to joining forces with a major agency group, they express optimism: “Let’s build the next 10 years.” The acquisition signals a new chapter for Ask Phill, combining entrepreneurial agility with the resources of a leading digital services group.
