Tenways, a bicycle manufacturer founded in China in 2021 and now headquartered in Amsterdam, has acquired the Dutch bicycle brand Sparta. The acquisition was announced on October 16, 2026, by the curators managing the bankruptcy of Accell Group, Sparta’s former parent company.

The deal transfers full ownership and brand rights of Sparta to Tenways. While financial terms were not disclosed, the acquisition is part of a broader divestment process following Accell’s August 2023 bankruptcy. Earlier, Accell’s other brands such as Koga, Babboe, and Batavus were sold to Singaporean investor Dutech.

Sparta is known for its electric city bikes and trekking bicycles designed for longer distances. The brand has a strong heritage in the Dutch and broader European markets, making it a valuable asset for Tenways as it seeks to expand its presence in the e-mobility sector.

Tenways focuses on electric bicycles for urban and trekking use, leveraging its Amsterdam headquarters to serve European customers. The acquisition of Sparta complements Tenways’ existing product portfolio and provides access to an established customer base and distribution network.

According to the curators, the sale of Sparta was conducted separately to maximize value for Accell’s creditors. The transaction ensures the continuation of the Sparta brand under new ownership, preserving its legacy in the competitive European bicycle market.

The strategic rationale behind the acquisition centers on combining Tenways’ electric bike technology with Sparta’s brand recognition. This synergy is expected to enhance product offerings and accelerate growth in the European electric bicycle market. Tenways plans to integrate sales, distribution, and after-sales services to optimize operational efficiencies.

The European electric bicycle market is experiencing dynamic growth, driven by increasing consumer interest in sustainable urban mobility. However, the sector faces challenges including fluctuating demand post-pandemic and supply chain disruptions. Tenways’ acquisition of Sparta positions it to better compete against established players by leveraging brand heritage and technological innovation.

Financial details such as deal value and multiples were not disclosed. The acquisition is expected to benefit from shared supply chain efficiencies and consolidated research and development efforts. Tenways aims to retain key Sparta personnel and dealer relationships to ensure a smooth transition.

Looking ahead, Tenways will focus on integrating Sparta’s operations and expanding its market reach across the Netherlands and wider Europe. The company anticipates regulatory approvals to proceed without significant hurdles. This acquisition marks a significant step in Tenways’ strategy to become a leading player in the European e-bike industry.
