Famille Vandewoestyne Acquires Belgian Groupe Loicq Cheese Operations

Famille Vandewoestyne acquires Belgian artisanal cheese producer Groupe Loicq, expanding its organic cheese portfolio and market presence.

French agro-food family business Famille Vandewoestyne has completed the acquisition of Groupe Loicq, a well-established Belgian producer specializing in artisanal and organic cheeses. The transaction includes Groupe Loicq’s fromageries such as ChèvrArdennes, Le Campagnard, and the Fromagerie Biologique de Vielsalm, known for their traditional and ultra-fresh cheese products. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Founded in the 1960s by Roger Loicq, Groupe Loicq has grown into a Belgian reference in artisanal and organic cheese production. The group expanded significantly in 1990 when Roger and his son Didier Loicq acquired ChèvrArdennes and Le Campagnard, the latter recognized for its ultra-fresh cheeses. Later, the Fromagerie Biologique de Vielsalm joined the portfolio, offering traditional organic specialties such as Vieux-Liège, Waterloo, and Ardenner cheeses.

Famille Vandewoestyne brings over 60 years of expertise in the agro-food sector and is a prominent player in the French cheese industry. This acquisition supports Vandewoestyne’s strategic growth ambitions by broadening its product range and strengthening its footprint in the Belgian artisanal and organic cheese market.

Didier Loicq emphasized the importance of continuity, stating the deal ensures the preservation of the group’s activities, employment, and artisanal know-how by partnering with a family-owned industrial player sharing similar values. His son, Amaury Loicq, will assist in the transition alongside Karl Vandewoestyne to maintain client relationships and continue recent development efforts.

The deal is expected to generate synergies through cross-selling opportunities, expanded product offerings targeting premium and health-conscious consumers, and operational efficiencies. Vandewoestyne plans to leverage its industry expertise to optimize manufacturing, streamline administrative functions, and consolidate supply chains. Shared procurement is also anticipated to reduce raw material costs.

Market analysts note that this acquisition strengthens Vandewoestyne’s position in the Belgian artisanal cheese sector, intensifying competition and accelerating industry consolidation. Rivals may respond with similar deals or increased innovation to defend market share.

Key integration challenges include maintaining the artisanal quality and brand identity of Groupe Loicq’s products, aligning corporate cultures, and managing supply chain complexities across multiple production sites.

Legal advisory support for the transaction was provided by K/Partners, with Closing acting as intermediary. The deal marks a significant step in Vandewoestyne’s expansion strategy, combining complementary product portfolios and operational capabilities to capture growth in the organic and artisanal cheese market.

Looking ahead, the companies will focus on seamless integration and product innovation to capitalize on emerging consumer trends favoring organic and traditional cheese varieties.
