InfraRed Capital Partners, a global infrastructure asset manager headquartered in London, has acquired a majority stake in Rail Modal Group (RMG), an Albany, New York-based inland intermodal rail terminal and export logistics platform. The transaction marks a strategic investment to expand and optimize infrastructure supporting containerized agricultural exports across the U.S. Midwest and Plains.
Founded in 2018 by Greg Oberting, who remains invested and will continue as CEO, RMG operates four large-scale terminals that connect regional agricultural producers and processors with the North American Class I rail network and major U.S. West Coast ports. The company specializes in converting inbound container capacity into efficient outbound export movements, facilitating cost-effective freight transport from producers’ doors to foreign markets.
RMG’s platform plays a vital role in the $1.5 trillion U.S. agriculture sector by providing integrated logistics solutions that preserve the identity and integrity of containerized exports. Since inception, RMG has shipped over 1,200 unit trains, equivalent to approximately 200 million truck miles, underscoring its scale and operational efficiency.
InfraRed, managing approximately $13 billion in equity capital globally, focuses on mid-market infrastructure investments with a long-term value-add approach. The firm plans to support RMG’s growth by expanding terminal capacity, enhancing service capabilities, and developing new locations to meet rising demand for inland intermodal logistics.
Greg Oberting commented, “InfraRed demonstrated a strong understanding of our business and the essential role RMG plays in the North American supply chain. Their experience scaling infrastructure platforms and long-term investment approach make them an ideal partner. I look forward to continuing to lead RMG and expanding our services to customers and communities.” InfraRed’s spokesperson added, “RMG is an established, asset-backed platform with a differentiated network and strong customer relationships. We are excited to support its next phase of growth with capital and operational expertise.”
The acquisition aligns with broader industry trends emphasizing supply chain resilience and efficiency, particularly in agricultural exports where inland terminals bridge the gap between producers and coastal ports. InfraRed’s investment is expected to accelerate consolidation in the inland intermodal logistics sector, prompting competitors to enhance capacity and technology to remain competitive.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. InfraRed’s global platform and sector expertise position it to optimize RMG’s operations, improve terminal throughput, and leverage economies of scale. The partnership also aims to address integration challenges such as maintaining operational continuity during expansions and navigating regulatory approvals.
Looking ahead, InfraRed and RMG plan to focus on scaling terminal infrastructure, broadening geographic reach, and enhancing service resilience to capture growing agricultural export volumes. This investment underscores InfraRed’s commitment to essential infrastructure that supports global trade and supply chain efficiency.
