Renesas Completes Acquisition of Irida Labs to Boost Vision AI Software

Renesas completes acquisition of Irida Labs, enhancing edge AI software and integrating it into Renesas 365 platform. Learn about this strategic move.

Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a leading semiconductor supplier headquartered in Tokyo, Japan, has completed the acquisition of Irida Labs, a Greece-based company specializing in embedded software for AI-powered visual perception systems. This strategic move strengthens Renesas’ edge AI embedded processing offerings and supports its broader Digitalization strategy. The deal was announced on May 07, 2026.

While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Renesas has acquired 100% ownership of Irida Labs. The acquisition enables Renesas to integrate Irida Labs’ Vision AI software and development tools into its newly launched Renesas 365 platform, which unifies electronics system development from discovery through lifecycle management.

Irida Labs is recognized for its PerCV.ai software suite, designed to interpret and process visual data from cameras and sensors used in industrial inspection, robotics, smart cities, IoT, agriculture, and healthcare applications. By combining this software with Renesas’ AI-enabled RA microcontrollers and RZ microprocessors, the company aims to deliver high-performance, power-efficient edge AI solutions ready for rapid deployment.

Renesas Electronics Corporation is a global leader in microcontrollers and semiconductor solutions, serving automotive, industrial, infrastructure, and IoT markets. Irida Labs, based in Greece, specializes in embedded AI software for visual perception, providing tools that simplify AI model training, deployment, and system integration.

Gaurang Shah, Vice President and General Manager of Renesas’ Embedded Processing Product Group, stated, “This acquisition accelerates our efforts to simplify how intelligence is designed and deployed at the edge. With Irida Labs’ Vision AI tools and software now part of Renesas, developers can rapidly develop, train, and deploy edge AI systems without deep AI knowledge.”

Vassilis Tsagaris, CEO and Co-Founder of Irida Labs, added, “Joining Renesas marks an important milestone in our edge Vision AI journey. Combining our software expertise with Renesas’ hardware and global ecosystem opens new opportunities to deliver meaningful impact on edge AI worldwide.”

The acquisition comes amid rising demand for intelligent edge systems across industries, where developers face challenges such as integrating power-constrained embedded processors, managing AI model deployment, and addressing latency and security concerns. Renesas’ integration of Irida Labs’ software into Renesas 365 aims to provide a seamless, end-to-end development experience for Vision AI and deep learning applications.

Market trends indicate growing adoption of AI-powered vision systems in robotics, smart cities, industrial automation, and healthcare. Renesas’ move strengthens its competitive position by offering a fully integrated hardware and software solution, differentiating it from rivals who may need to pursue similar acquisitions or partnerships.

Financial details such as deal value and multiples were not disclosed. Renesas plans to leverage the acquisition to accelerate time-to-market for AI-enabled camera and machine vision systems, expand into new verticals, and capture higher-margin software and services revenue streams.

Integration efforts will focus on aligning software development with semiconductor product cycles and embedding Irida Labs’ tools into the Renesas 365 platform. Cross-cultural collaboration between Japan and Greece teams will be critical to success.

Looking ahead, Renesas aims to advance its vision AI system solutions, combining embedded AI software and hardware to meet the increasing complexity of edge AI applications. The acquisition positions Renesas to capitalize on emerging opportunities in industrial automation, robotics, smart cities, and IoT markets.
